With a career spanning over two decades, Moves Johnson has been releasing music with various projects since early 2003. Starting out in Toronto’s underground music scene, Moves began his career as the drummer and songwriter for various rock bands in and around the city. 2008 saw Moves Johnson take the helm as frontman for the first time in TheCounterPoint, an experimental project that featured Johnson singing and playing guitar. This group would lay the foundation for what would later become the satirical indie band Stereoblastula.
Around this time, Johnson was hired by underground punk cult icon Buddy Black to rerecord drums for his upcoming self-titled EP.
With the release of the Buddy Black EP, Moves Johnson and Stereoblastula bandmate PK Smooth were brought in as live support on Drums and Bass respectively. With backup guitarist/sound engineer Dayne Gerous, the quartet went on to record 2 more albums as Buddy Black and The Midnight Society – the album Adversary Avenue and The Road To Waterloo EP, the later of which sees Moves Johnson credited as a songwriter for “Renfield Would Approve”.
Moves also appears on the Buddy Black/Watered Down Split EP, where he is credited as the drummer for both bands.
Since relocating to Berlin in 2018, Moves Johnson has focused largely on his solo project. His music is not constrained to any one genre, and he has put out tracks ranging from punk to folk to hip-hop and even orchestral. He has worked with various artists, producers and engineers in the city, though the vast majority of releases see Johnson playing most instruments, as well as some level of recording, mixing, mastering or producing.
Preferring a “DIY” approach to recording and publishing, he has voluntarily remained without the assistance of major record labels, instead releasing all art under his own umbrella Moves Johnson Media. Under this self-managed label, Moves Johnson has released five singles, four EPs, and one full-length album.Moves full-length album, The Life and Times of Douglas Robinson, features orchestral arrangements set to interviews with a World War 2 survivor and explores the everyday struggles that victims of war must endure. Moves Johnson Media also distributes the band Audio Sausage, which features Moves Johnson and former TheCounterPoint bandmate Jesse Faria playing “short, loud, fast songs that are not quite punk and not quite metal”. The band is known for the references to various sausages in their song names.
In addition to his musical work, Moves Johnson has made significant strides in the world of digital media. His NFT creations, including the popular Baby Wizards and Overlords trading cards, are available on platforms like Tensor and Drip.Haus.
Constantly evolving and leaving a lasting imprint, Moves Johnson stands as a true maverick in both the music and digital art worlds.
